Kindergarten Happenings

Here are a few pictures from last Friday!  We ended the week with a trip to the pond with Mrs. Bennett's Class.  We talked about how low the water is, observed the surroundings and illustrated for our science journals.  We learned words such as precipitation & evaporation.   We also enjoyed a visit from the Bravehearts and Jake the Lion.
Arianna & Ella worked hard on this pattern block picture.
 Being Scientists and making observations.

Scientists also record what they observe.  We are illustrating and writing what we noticed.

Bravehearts visit & acknowledging summer reading success.

Here are two summer readers!  Nice job girls!
Sharing the marker!  We were getting ready for journal writing.  We talked about TTQA (turn the question around), dashed out sentences, and sounded out words.  The children helped to finish the sentences.  We also talked about important parts of a sentence. (capital, spacing & punctuation)

Exploring geo sticks.  Some of us created shapes, numbers, letters and sight words.

Josie is working on her season puppets.
HWT ~ We are practicing Frog Jump letters.
We have learned how to write E, F, B, D, P, & R so far.
We are making another class book.  We read Ten Black Dots from Donald Crews and then created a book of our own titled Thirteen Black Dots.

Rita Rainbow came to visit our classroom and teach us about the "primary colors".  The kids were excited to see the magic of making the colors of the rainbow with just three colors.  They then had a chance to experiment on their own.  Not only is this great to learn about colors it is also a wonderful fine motor activity to strengthen our finger muscles!
Practicing our sight words by building them with magnetic letters, writing them and reading them.
Look at these two cuties! I just loved the sayings on their shirts.
Words to remember: "Love will save the day" & "We all must love one another".
Write the room.  Looking at the two numbers provided and figuring out which number is missing.

STEM challenges ~ Nice job working on this Ella!
OSMO was introduced this week.  The children are very excited to use this activity.
Way to go Will.  Write the room. Counting and recording your answers.
Pattern block creations.  The students built a design or picture using pattern blocks then recorded what they made, how many blocks they used and how many of each block.
Chickens Come Home in physical education class!
Choice time - being creative and making stick puppets at the writing center!
Dominc and Cameron built a store using the large lego blocks.
Today we read a poem about apples and then did a STEM Challenge using a toilet paper roll, ten sticks and 8 apples.  The students loved working on this challenge.  We even discovered how good it feels not to give up and keep trying when something is difficult.
Will was very excited to make the first challenge.

Cameron & Hunter were super excited to complete the second challenge!

Color Zoo ~ a book written by Lois Ehlert.  We created our own Color Zoo book.  The children used shapes to create animals.  They did a wonderful job!
MYSTERY READER!!!  Yeah, we had our first mystery reader today!
Thank you Ms. Hunt for coming and reading a couple stories to us!  We loved having you and Cameron was very excited to have you!!

 Painting Pumpkins!

GoNoodle ~ I introduced the children to GoNoodle this week.  They loved the different movement activities!  We had a little fun with the Kidz Bop kids and danced!  They did a terrific job!!

All School Meeting - We discussed safety at this months meeting.  Mrs. Bennett, Miss Hutchinson and I noted that the kindergarten children were a very respectful audience during the assembly!

Wow, that was a busy week!  We had a lot of fun learning this week!
This is truly an amazing group of children!!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Kindergarten Happenings!

Here's to another great week!  We began the week with four new work boards, journal writing and some rounds of Daily Five.  Once again we had another successful week!  Enjoy the pictures from our week!
Hunter is completing an activity call inventory bags.  This activity focuses on counting objects with 1-1 correspondence, recoding the correct number & showing its quantity.  We worked with bags containing items #'s 5-10.
Cameron is illustrating in his journal.  This week we wrote about something we would do to stay safe during a fire.
Dominic & Norah are tapping out syllables in words.  The paws have pictures on them and the children tap out how many syllables (parts) are in the word. Then they put the clothes pin on the correct number of syllables.  This is also great to build muscles in their fingers.

Arianna and Catie are working on finding the picture that has the same beginning sound as the larger picture on top.  For example, net has the same beginning sound as tomato, nest or hat.  The child would clip the picture with the same sound.
 STAR OF THE WEEK!!
Aviva was the "Star of the Week" this week.  On Monday she brought in a Dr. Seuss book and read it to the class.  She was very excited to share the book with everyone and we all were very proud of her reading.  On Tuesday, she shared her "All about Me" pages and family photo page.  Many of the children had some connections with Aviva as she shared with us.  Way to Go Aviva!  You did a terrific job!!

Michael, Arianna, Aviva & Ella are playing a math game called "Racing Bears".  The students use bear counters, chips and a die to play this game.  They roll the dice and move their bear up.  When they reach the top, they collect a chip and continue play.  The children seemed to enjoy this game.
Josie is working on estimating jars.  We had the children look into a jar and estimate how many objects were inside.  Afterwards, they counted to find the actual amount.  We had some wonderful guesses and it was a great way to assess if the children are understanding numbers & quantities.  It was also helpful to practice number writing and show correct quantities.
Thank you for helping your child complete their homework on a family meeting spot.  We had another discussion on this and many of the children seemed more comfortable knowing what to do and where to go.  They did a fantastic job sharing their pictures and telling us about their meeting spot.  We discovered that some of us have the same type of meeting spot!

HWT ~ Handwriting without Tears ~ We began learning how to write some upper case letters.  The first letters of focus are called "Frog Jump" letters because they begin at the top with a straight line down.  Then you "frog jump" to the top to complete the letter.  We practiced writing in our HWT books and using our HWT ap on the ipad.

  PUMPKINS, PUMPKINS!!!
The children were very excited to pick out a pumpkin from the truck.  A great big THANK YOU to the Lion's Club for bringing the pumpkins to BMS and sharing them with us.  We haven't sent the pumpkins home yet, as we hope to do a special something with them.
Off we go....We are headed to the fire station!  Luckily we got a beautiful day for a walk!

Looking at the trucks and asking questions.
Future Fire Fighters walking through the new ladder truck!

Sitting in front of the new ladder truck.

Cate is using the Telian Lively Letters to build real and nonsense words.  I would say a sound, the children would find it then we worked on blending the sounds together.  They did an awesome job!!
Kacie was excited to use my pen to write her numbers and show quantities.  She decided she liked it better than the pencils!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
