Kindergarten Happenings!

Another great week in kindergarten!! We continue to work hard and try our best everyday! The students are working on blending sounds, segmenting sounds, addition, subtraction and much more. Some of the students really love an extra challenge which is exciting to see. I am very impressed with all their work remotely and during in person learning. We are excited to join both cohorts together.  One last week of remote learning! (crossing fingers that is true) Here are some pictures from the week.  Hope you enjoy them.
Playing a game as we roll the dice, identify the quantity and add 1 more!
Sorting digraphs - sh, wh, th & ch

Sorting nonsense and real words
Students are doing a great job reading cvc words

Game Time!

We practiced listening to word problems and deciding if it was an addition or subtraction problem. The students drew a picture and wrote an equation to show their work and solve.

Practicing counting and cardinality. Matching the correct amount to the number on the bowl.
Matching ten frames to teen numbers.  Practicing starting at 10 and counting on.

Sentence Scramble - Putting sentences in the correct order. Students are using clues to help them out; like a capital at the beginning and punctuation at the end.

Another amazing reader!  Avery filled her hat and earned her certificate!!  Great job Avery!!
Reading during Star Time. We have had fun reading with the students during Start Time.  We circulate between the two days so we can get to everyone.  They are doing a terrific job!

A fun game working on teen numbers and subitizing!
More subitizing with cards

Look at these two and their awesome geo board designs!

As you can see, it was a wonderful week! We also talked about the signs of Spring, wrote in our journals, practiced writing lowercase l & k, and discussed our feelings about the changes that are slowly happening.  We will continue to talk about our feelings about the changes so everyone has a chance to express theirs and understand that they aren't alone with their mixed feelings/emotions.
Report cards went home today, please be sure to sign the envelope and send the envelopes back.  You can keep the report card if you want to.
Hope you have an awesome weekend!

Kindergarten Hapenings!

HAPPY SPRING!!

Here is to another week!  The children did a magnificent job! Cohort A contributed a large marble to the marble jar for their awesome flexibility and cooperation during our Monday move.  Cohort B earned a giant marble during gym for their amazing work with Ms. Draper!  Way to work hard kindergarten!  We are so proud of you!!

When I arrived on Monday our room was quite chilly and our heat was broken.  While they fixed the problem and put a few extra space heaters in our room we moved to the gymnasium to begin our day.  The kids did a wonderful job completing our morning meeting, calendar, journal and work board in the gym.  We returned for snack and art to a more comfortable classroom.  We were very impressed with the transition considering it wasn't planned and we didn't have all our normal materials. Great job!!
During math we continued to work on subtraction.  Here is an activity where the answer is written on the large piece of paper.  The students have flash cards to solve and place on the correct answer.  The students were also provided with manipulatives if they wanted to use them to help them solve the equation.  The children rotated between the large sheets and a walk the room activity.

The other math activity was practicing counting, 1-1 correspondence and number writing. Students walked around the room searching for cards. Once they found a card they would count the pictures on the card and record their answer on the recording sheet.  This activity worked on numbers 1-20.

Pi Day ~ March 14th
In honor of Pi Day we all received mini pies to take home and enjoy.  The children were excited about the pies.  Hope they shared a little with you!

PTL - Parent Teacher LINK group surprised the teachers with some treats this week!
Thank you for the delicious treats!  It was very sweet!

Here are two more amazing readers!  Hadley and Alexis did some reading to fill in their Dr. Seuss Hat. They got their certificate and wore their special hat!
Short vowels ~ This work board worked on identifying the short vowel in a CVC word.  Students had to tap out the word and find the vowel sound.

Some pattern block creations!
Here is Cohort B working on those math activities I explained above. They did a terrific job solving the equations and counting accurately.

More pies!!  YUMMY!!

This work board worked on sorting real words and nonsense words.  Students had to read the CVC word and decide if it was real or nonsense.

Another work board was sorting digraphs. Students had to sort words with sh, th, ch, wh in them.  Sometimes the digraph was found at the beginning of the word and sometimes it was at the end.

A third work board was sorting beginning sounds /b/, /d/, /p/ & /q/. The tricky part was being sure you placed it under the correct lowercase letter.  This was also to work on the confusion of b, d, p, q because of how they all look similar.

Look at these awesome sentences!!  Hannah told us this week she wants to be a kindergarten teacher!  That warms my heart!  I bet she will make a wonderful teacher someday.  I also imagine she may change her mind between now and then too!  ;)
Another terrific reader!  Anna filled her Dr. Seuss hat and received her certificate!  Way to go!!
Pies, pies & more pies!

We had a great week!  On Wednesday, extra desks were dropped off in our room.  We moved them tentatively so the kids could get an idea on how many desks there would be but we are far from being ready.  Some of the desks need to be resized for our little bodies & I have a lot of moving/organizing to do so we can get the space we need but hopefully still have the options to use the rugs.  I hope to keep some of the rugs so we can alternate who gets to sit on a rug on different days. It will be a busy couple weeks trying to reorganize student materials & the classroom.  We are excited to have all the students back and have begun some talks about the different feelings we might be experiencing.

We hope you had a wonderful weekend!  Spring is finally here so we can look forward to warmer days!!
