Work Boards

Earlier in the week we worked on making cvc & ccvc words. Some children even wrote sentences for some words. The children sorted pretend cookies into real and nonsense words. We also practiced creating different ways to make a number sentence given a specific number.

Our new work boards are working on the concepts of rhyming, middle vowel sounds, identifying beginning and ending digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) and practicing writing our names and letters with correct formation.

Today we continued to practice math. The children worked in pairs. Each pair was given a sum (whole) and had to figure out different ways to make the number (two missing parts).  They did a great job!

The 100th Day!!

Hip, hip hooray! Today was the 100th day!  We had a fantastic day celebrating the 100th day.  The children completed many activities throughout the day.   We began the day writing about what we would do if we were given $100.  I will put this together for a class book.  The children did a great job writing and illustrating their pages.  We continued our day counting to 100 in different ways, doing 100 exercises, making 100 day hats, glasses and monkey masks for Chinese New Year.  Here are some pictures for our fabulous day!
Look at these awesome 100 day projects the children did at home and shared with their classmates.

Here is part of our fancy hats.  10 strips with 10 dots on each to make 100 dots!

Cutting monkey parts to add to our painted paper plates.

Decorating 100th day glasses.

100 dots!  Using Q-tips the students are putting 10 dots in 10 different boxes to make 100.  We practiced counting by 1's and 10's.

Strengthening our fine motor skills by coloring and cutting out the front of our hats.

Great job on your glasses Elina!
Here is a picture of everyone with their hats and glasses!

The year of the Monkey!  Happy New Year!

Hope you enjoyed our pictures because we had a fabulous day!

It is going to be one busy week!  Below you will see some of the things we did today to prepare for our week.  The children made Valentine/Friendship bags for their special cards.  We also painted paper plates in preparation for tomorrows activity.  We learned about Chinese New Year! It is the year of the "monkey".  Tomorrow we have some more exciting activities planned because it is the 100th day of school!

Hope everyone enjoyed the snowy day and got outside for some fresh air. I know it's cold but it can be a lot of fun too!!

Our 100th day of school will now be Tuesday. Please bring in your 100th day homework for Tuesday.

We will have a Valentine/Friendship Day celebration on Friday, February 12th. A note was suppose to go home yesterday but...the snow surprised us instead. I typically have children sign their cards and leave the envelopes blank to make distribution easier. If you had your child put names on the  envelopes now worries. I will send the note home Monday with a special snack bag for that day as well.

As we return on Monday the ground will be covered with snow. If your child wants to play during recess he/she will need to bring snow gear including snow pants, jacket, mittens, hat, and boots. To make this easier for your child please send the gear in a separate bag so they can bring it to and from school each day. Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend!  Here are a few creations that were made on Thirsday!  They all said they were "Star Wars" ships.

Animals in the winter

Ask your child what animals do in the winter.  Today we learned about hibernation, migration and adaptation.  We watched a short video of animals in the winter, sang a song about hibernation and sorted animals into the three groups.  We learned that some animals are "true hibernators" and will sleep through the whole winter but some are "light sleepers."  The "light sleepers" will hibernate but on warmer days/nights they may come out and search for food, then go back to sleep.   The children enjoyed making a book about the hibernating animals and did an incredible job coloring and completing this activity! Mrs. Gaucher and I were impressed with the coloring.  Everyone took their time and stayed in the lines!  It was amazing and the best coloring of the year!!
We also work with solving addition problems. The children worked in pairs while Mrs. Gaucher and I read story problems.  One partner was in charge or using chips to show the problem and the other partner was in charge of writing the correct number sentence for the problem. They did a terrific job on this!

HOMEWORK REMINDER
This was sent home last weekend but a few kiddos were worried their parents didn't get it.
This can be as simple or elaborate as your child would like. Have fun with it!!
