Kindergarten Happenings!

We were very busy this week.  We wrote and illustrated two books about Spring.  We are up to 10 class books!  This is so exciting because if we make 13 each child will take one home at the end of the year.  It will make a nice keepsake.
This snowman math activity was a challenge. Each number was shown in different ways such as using fingers, ten frames, dominoes, dice, and words.  Way to go Kacie!
I hope you enjoyed your colorful eggs!  The children were very excited about painting the large eggs.  They really came out beautiful with bright colors!
An "egg-stra" special activity.  The children loved using the crayons to decorate the egg and were amazed as they painted watercolors on top.  The crayons act like a raincoat and resist the paint.  These also looked terrific!
This is an "egg-stra" special class because they work so hard!  The children did a wonderful job writing a message inside their eggs!  Their writing is looking so good!
The students works very carefully to cut out the eggs.

"Egg-stra" special activities.  We learned two big words this week: oviparous & oology.
The children learned oology is the study of eggs and that oviparous is an animal that lays eggs.  We named some animals that are oviparous, a poem about eggs and read a book about eggs. Afterwards we had a STEM challenge using plastic eggs and playdo.  The students were challenged to build a tower using the eggs and see how high they could get it.  It was very challenging but many of the groups persevered and were able to accomplish something.

 Proud of their big tower!

We then moved outside for some egg relay races. The children were challenged to move from on spot around an egg across the way holding an egg on a spoon.  They had a great time cheering each other on!

On Wednesday we opted to skip choice time for some extra recess time!
The weather was perfect!

Thursday during enrichment we worked in partners to create marble runs.  Some of the groups were more successful than others but they all worked well together and came up with different ideas. We will continue to work on them next week with a new challenge.
Planning & constructing

 Finished products

Another STEM challenge - build a jellybean structure with toothpicks and jellybeans.  These girls worked really hard to come up with some structures!

As you can see we had a busy week.  I am very proud of the children and all their hard work.  Next week we will continue to challenge ourselves and work hard.  We will be learning about our Country and working on composing and decomposing numbers 11-19.

We are running out of cleaning spray and wipes.  I try to wash the tables a few times a day depending on the activities we complete. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Kindergarten Happenings!

What a week!  The children did an awesome job this week and I was so very impressed with their writing!  We wrote and illustrated 2 class books this week and the sentences they wrote were terrific.  Everyone is working so hard, sounding out words, including spaces, punctuation and working on neat lower case letters.  I am very proud of them!!

We also completed some math stations or games to help us with adding one more and adding numbers together.  Students worked with me using a pot of gold and subtraction.  I sat with them to see how quickly and what strategies were helping them to solve the problems.  Everyone is working hard and being successful.  Some of us are able to do it in our heads while others benefit from using manipulatives and taking some extra time to think.  I love that they are using different strategies and doing what works for them!
Rock & Roll ~ Some children wanted to play on their own and some worked with a partner.  Way to go girls you should be proud!!
Subtracting gold ~ Way to work hard boys!
 Adding one more

"On a rainy day.... writing and illustrating one of our class books.

Practicing writing numbers and reviewing some number concepts in a mini math journal.

 Seussical Jr.
We enjoyed the performance put on by the 3-5 grade drama club on Thursday morning.  They did a terrific job and the night performance was even better!  I hope you had a chance to see it.
I know the kids loved it!
 Daily Five Rounds
Read to Someone - all smiles when reading with a friend
Working with a teacher. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Fallon join us on Friday mornings to work with the students and help us with our Daily Five rounds.
 Osmo & computer time
During Daily Five we also include opportunities to work with technology.
Osmo allows us to practice letters, words and math concepts.
When we work on the computer we focus on reading skills using StarFall.
Work on Writing ~ Today was the first time I included "work on writing" and the children did an amazing job!!  I was so very impressed with the writing they did all on their own!  During this activity the children can write about anything they want.  It was nice to see that even though there was no teacher support, many of the children were able to write a sentence on their own!! Some of them even remembered a capital at the beginning, spaces, punctuation and lower case letters!  I was blown away with the writing they did and once they finish I will send it home so you can be just as proud!!
 Proud of his work!
A very detailed sentence. " I like to play football with Connor in the backyard."
 Math with Mr. Flournoy
Mr. Flournoy joins us for math on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The children worked with a "Learning Palette" on a variety of math concepts.  They worked in groups of three.  One side challenges them to place a colored disc on the palette as they figure out math problems. The other side shows them where each disc should go so they can self check their answers.

"GoNoodle" Kidz Bop ~ one of their favorite movement breaks is dancing along with the Kidz Bop group!  They love to wiggle and shake!

As you can see we had a busy week. We were sad the snow festival was cancelled but we managed to fill the time with some fun!  The snow is melting pretty quickly and a lot of mud is taking its place.  Please keep that in mind if your child is bringing snow gear to school.  A lot of the gear was still soaked on Friday after playing on Thursday.  You may want to wash &/or dry their things before an odor appears.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
