Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

We had a fabulous day celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday! We began the day writing and illustrating our favorite Dr. Seuss book.  Some of our favorites were Green Eggs and Ham, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, The Sneetches and other wonderful books.  We also learned a little bit about Dr. Seuss and the different names that he has.  He was born Theodor Seuss Geisel.  He used Dr. Seuss as a writer but also has written books as Theo LeSieg.  We discovered that he got the name by writing his real last name backwards.  How clever!  We also discussed how Dr. Seuss loved to rhyme and use silly or nonsense words.  It helped to make his books fun and interesting to read.

Here are a few pictures of the students writing and illustrating their favorite books.

As the students finished their writing and illustrations they were able to color and cut out a hat and tie just like the one The Cat in the Hat wears.  The children enjoyed wearing their hats and ties! After this we headed off to art where we would meet our Community Reader.  Chief Z. joined us in art and read two Dr. Seuss books for Community Reading Day.  We enjoyed having him read to us.  We heard There's A Wocket in my Pocket and Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! We would love to thank Chief Z. for taking the time out of his day and reading to us!

We talked about rhyming words and word families.  We looked at four of Dr. Seuss' books and focused on a rhyming family.  The children each came up with a word to add to a word family group and wrote it on the chart.

We made a class book inspired by the story Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now.  Each child thought a real or nonsense way to travel.  Damien is traveling a whale's spout.  Super cute idea!

We read the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  The children were excellent listeners and enjoyed the story.  It is a long story but they were engaged the entire time and earned some marbles and stickers for doing such a great job!  After reading the story we became scientists and made our own "oobleck".  The children experimented and explored the oobleck.  Some really enjoyed touching and playing with it!  It is a little messy but a lot of fun.  As they explored we discussed if we could hold it, bounce it, make a ball, pull it apart and if it was a solid or a liquid.

Here's a picture of our hats and ties!

What a day!!  We had so much planned we will continue some of our work tomorrow.  We have some games to play concentrating on rhyming, letters/sounds, and sight words.  Stay tuned for more!
