The Monday morning snow caused a bit of excitement! The children are definitely showing some signs of the holiday season and snowy weather coming upon us quickly! They each have a little extra vim and vigor to them. Despite the extra excitement, we were very busy this week! Here are some of the things we worked on.
On our way to journals we created a sentence as an example of how we would TTQA (Turn The Question Around) our journal question. AJ is helping us to fill in one of the words in the sentence. We also talked about having a capital letter in the beginning, spaces between words and punctuation at the end of the sentence. Ask your child to sing the "sentence song".
Blending sounds to make words. As our ticket to snack I gave each of the children individual sounds. They had to blend the sounds and say the word. They also wrote the word on the easel. We are working hard on blending sounds to make a word. For example: m-o-th = moth.
Here is an example of a Daily Five word work. The children are saying the name of the picture and using letters to represent each sound. It amazes me how well the children are doing!
A challenge for many but they didn't give up and worked really hard! Very impressive. These are sentences that are broken up into words. The children were given 4-5 packs of words that they had to read and put in the correct order. They attended to capitalization & punctuation to help them get started. Some children even wanted to write each sentence on paper! Wow, way to strive for excellence!
Stocking stuffers~ the children were provided with strips of stockings with letters on them. There was one stocking missing a letter. They had to figure out what the missing letter was and clip the correct clothes pin in its place.
Presents under the tree. Each tree has a picture on it. The children spell out the word with the letters on the presents and place them under the tree. This is a great way to practice sound segmentation!
Math - addition
The next few pictures are of the children practicing addition with cubes and writing equations. We continue to review the many vocabulary words involved with addition.
(equation, add, join, plus, sum, addition sentence, equal)
Some children worked as partners to figure out these words and make a sentence. Others wanted to do it on their own. They all worked really hard and never gave up. We were reading sight words, blending sounds, and chunking bigger words into smaller pieces.
A bit of a challenge but Owen and Lily enjoyed it. These words included blends such as fl, bl, tr, etc.
HWT practice- We practiced center starters and learned how to write the capital letter A & S. The children look forward to practicing on the HWT app.
Maker Space!!! I hope you and your family had a chance to visit the Maker Space on Wednesday night. I spent recess and lunch time visiting and learning about all the cool things we can do there. The teachers were provided with a delicious lunch and a few extraordinary parents gave up their time to set up, learn and teach us all about the awesomeness! We are so thankful to have such an wonderful group of parents supporting our learning and the children's. Thank you so very much! I really enjoyed learning about the different STEM activities available!
Osmo & Makey Makey
Mrs. Trudeau came to help us strengthen our bodies and fine motor skills. We did some eggrolls and superman. We are getting stronger and are able to hold it a little longer each time.
Tennis balls and pennies ~ The children worked to strengthen their fingers using tennis balls with slits in them and pennies. They had to hold the ball in one hand, place the coins on the table and pinch their fingers to pick up each coin. After the coins were in the palm of their hand, they had to slide each coin up to their finger and thumb, squeeze the ball and slip the coin in to the slit. Harder than you think but we were successful with concentration and hard work!
The girls wanted to play school during choice time.
We are looking forward to our "Marble Party"! The children deserve it after all their hard work!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm!
