Mason was the class reader the other day!  He did a great job reading a Pete the Cat book.  One of the kids favorite characters!  Wonderful job Mason!
Aiden turned in a show and tell coupon he had earned.  He was very excited to share two trucks that he had made.  They were super cool!  Great job Aiden!
We began learning about Geometry.  The children are learning about flat and solid shapes.  We spent some time making shapes using clay.  Some children even turned their shapes into people.  They really enjoyed this activity!
It's been Spring for quite some time but our class tree finally looks like a Spring tree.  We took the children outside so they could observe, illustrate and write about the changes they see on our tree.

Hexagons!  The children were challenged to find 6 different ways to create a hexagon using pattern blocks.  They did a terrific job.  Everyone showed some problem solving skills and persistence during this task.  Some childern even found additional ways to create hexagons!  Way to go everyone!!
Happy to show off their creation!

Hairy Heads

On Friday the children were excited to bring home their "hairy heads". Hope you can help your child to remember to continue to water it and they may be enjoy trying to give it a hair cut!  Just don't cut the grass too short!

Joseph also turned in a class reader coupon!  He enjoyed reading a book from home that he had brought in to share. Great job Joseph!

Weekly Happenings

As we entered the room this week we were so surprised to see how much our pumpkin seeds have grown.  They have grown quite big and look very healthy! They will be a great addition to the school garden once they are transplanted.
The kids were super excited to come in this week and see all the changes that occurred.  The peas and radishes grew a lot and the children were able to see the roots when we slid off the protective cover.  The "Hairy Heads" grew hair!!  Finally we checked on our experiments and discussed all the things we noticed.  The seed in the cabinet grew the most but it was yellow!  We placed it in the sun for two days and it was beautiful green!  The kids were amazed at how quickly this happened! We had a big conversation about why this may have happened.
We played a game to help us work with tens and ones.  The children loved playing this game using the smart board.  They had to get a certain amount by eating large or small bubbles.  If they went over the bubble would pop and they would have to try again.
Practicing tens and ones with manipulative.
Crab walking for a little movement activity!
Zackery was our Star Student this week!  He did a wonderful job on his poster and explaining all his photos.  Zackery shared a truck he likes to play with and his family page as well.  Super job Zackery!
On Wednesday, Mason celebrated his 6th birthday!  We hope he had a fabulous day!
Today we were closing up on our plant unit.  To end the unit we wanted to check what the children had learned about plants.  They had the opportunity to show us what they learned using objects in the classroom.  I told them it was up to them how they wanted to show their plant.  I suggested using pattern blocks, paint, craft materials, legos, and also had two sheets available for those that wanted to color, cut and label.  I was surprised that no one chose pattern blocks!  I thought for sure many of them would love to use blocks.  Below you can see some of the ways the students decided to show what they know!  They really did a great job!
Skylar & Zackery used some craft objects, markers and glue.
 This group decided to paint.
Damien wanted to draw what he knew.  He included both what a plant needs to survive and also labeled the parts of a plant.
Skylar's finished product.  Elina chose to color, cut and organize her plant.

We were also discussing being a good citizen this week.  We read the story Team Up to Clean Up today and the children decided they wanted to go out and pick up our fields.  The children wore gloves and worked in partners to find trash around the school.  They did a tremendous job!  We had some really full bags at the end! Below you will find some more pictures of us being good citizens!

 Proud Citizens!!
We had a great week!  We earned many marbles and worked hard throughout the week.  Have a wonderful weekend!  Hopefully this beautiful weather will continue and you can enjoy it!
